Title: Opportunities and Challenges in Healthcare Research

Healthcare research is evolving. Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta capture the lion share of funding for health services and policy research in Canada, as they also have the largest populations in the country. However, provincial investment in health services and policy research data reveal that that the leading per capita investors (from provincial sources of funding) include in the following order Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nova Scotia in Canada, according to Statistics Canada.
How has the pandemic impacted healthcare and research around it? Why did trust in science, trust in healthcare workers and trust in doctors and in pharmaceutical companies rise in this health crisis while trust in media and information sources was on the wane? What kinds of healthcare messages resonated more deeply with patients and consumers of healthcare? What do insights from healthcare providers, doctors, and pharmacists reveal about future attitudes to trust in healthcare services and products and providers? How will the post-pandemic post-vaccinated Canada react to messages regarding health? What lessons from patient experience can be learned in designing better or alternative futures?
Speakers will address the following topics while including case studies, examples, and data points through their presentations and in the discussions:
- What is the impact of growing research spend and data analytics on healthcare?
- How has the pandemic impacted the many worlds of healthcare and the way we research healthcare?
- What lessons about patient experience will drive the future of healthcare research in Canada versus other countries?
- What trends in technology enabled healthcare are being viewed as sources of comfort (hope) but also uncertainty?
- How are digital health and the use of high-precision of scaled devices (including the use of AI, and big data mining) being leveraged with the critical thinking of human resources to deploy better research design and outcomes in healthcare?
- What lessons from the pandemic will researchers take or be prepared for the next health crisis? Were there any historical precedents in healthcare research that shaped how researchers conducted research in this pandemic?
